The U.S. Automotive Economy: A Preliminary Post-Strike Analysis

Abstract:

The UAW and Ford, GM, and Stellantis recently ratified new contracts on the heels of a 47-day strike. By utilizing novel strike tactics, the union won wage and benefit gains that had been given up in the years since the great recession and made significant headway in representing the workforce in the automakers’ new and yet-to-be-built battery facilities. This presentation will review the contract outcomes, a preliminary look at the economic costs of the strikes, and what may be in store for the U.S. automotive industry in the years to come.
