Gerpisa colloquium, Bordeaux (2024)Résumé:
The UAW-Detroit Three contracts contain several provisions that will impact the cost structure of the U.S.-based automakers—including wages, benefits, working conditions, job security, product sourcing, and investment commitments. The contracts also addressed technology changes and unionization in the emerging U.S. battery supply chain. On the heels of the contract signing and the UAW’s launch of a 13-company organizing drive, other U.S. automakers also announced they would raise worker wages. This paper will review the economic impact of the 2023 strike, review major contractual changes (and the non-union firms’ responses) and discuss what the 2023 UAW-Detroit Three contracts might mean for the future of the U.S. auto industry.
